![]() ![]() He is accompanied at this Carnegie Hall concert by the two-keyboard tandem of Ronnie Foster and Jorge Dalto, electric bassist Stanley Banks (who still tours with Benson to this day), drummer Marvin Chapell and percussionist David Diggs. Still signed to Creed Taylor's CTI label, Benson performed material from Bad Benson, his successful soul-jazz crossover album released by CTI the previous year. Mosaic Contemporary has brought out a fine remastered edition on CD.George Benson - lead guitar, vocals Ronnie Foster - keyboards Jorge Dalto - piano Stanley Banks - electric bass Marvin Chapell - drums David Diggs - percussion Special guest: Milt Jackson - vibesĪt the time of this Newport Jazz Festival appearance, Benson was still a year away from his breakthrough triple-platinum smash hit, Breezin', which was produced by Tommy LiPuma and released on Warner Bros. In retrospect, listening to this record in the 21st century, it's difficult to imagine Benson making the switch from a classy guitar firebrand to a pop star so quickly. Foster keeps it all grounded, but this baby swings so hard it threatens to lift off. ![]() It's called "Octane." Over ten minutes in length, it begins with Benson in full roar before the time signature changes and triples, feeling like a bebop tune more than anything else. The album closes on another Benson original with Laws popping in again. The way Chapell rides the cymbal like a bell is particularly satisfying. His funky articulation of fifths and then eighths in his break is mesmerizing. The Latin rhythm and slippery guitar by Benson pull the rhythm section up a notch before he begins the head. The band then takes on Freddie Hubbard's "Sky Dive" with real aplomb. The entwining harmonic interplay between the two is gorgeous and goes on for over ten minutes. Hipper is the long snaky groove of Benson's own "Gone," with begins with the steady pulse of Hubert Laws playing a counterpoint foil on flute. ![]() (Perhaps Taylor understood Benson's crossover appeal he would cross over into the pop charts on Warner the next year with "This Masquerade.") The crowd dug it, but it's simply OK over the test of time. The concert version of the tune - on which Benson takes a vocal - has been added to with the substitution of the rhythm section and the later addition of a string orchestra in the studio. The version of "Summertime" here could have been recorded by Phil Spector. Organist Ronnie Foster's backing skills here are indispensable, as they keep Benson talking to the other members of the band. Regardless, this is a solid "live" effort with Benson cooking on all burners, beginning with a monster version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," which had been cut on an earlier album and had become a staple in the live set. There was some additional recording done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in 1976, where Taylor replaced the original rhythm section of Wayne Dockery on bass and Marvin Chapell on drums with Will Lee and Steve Gadd, for whatever reason Taylor had at the time. ![]() In Concert - Carnegie Hall is George Benson's final recording for Creed Taylor's CTI label, and was mostly recorded on one night in 1975. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can hang the feeders from tree branches or even plant hooks where they will be spotted by butterflies! ![]() ![]() In addition, Brock’s great-grandfather was the original owner of Moberly’s drive-in. According to Brock, the company once owned and operated nearly fifteen drive-ins-more than currently operate in Missouri. But the company’s history with drive-ins goes back a long way. With seven screens among its three theaters, B&B is the nation’s third largest drive-in operator as of this year. It represents a partnership between two Missouri families, Bagby and Bills, which both operated cinema businesses as early as 1924. B&B is a Missouri business through and through. ![]() He’s referring to March 1, 2014, and though the change in ownership is very fresh, both The Twin and the I-70 began screening films for the season in April. “We closed the deal on March first,” says Brock Bagby, Director of Programming and Business Development at B&B. B&B, eager to reach out to a new market and equipped with the means to buy digital projectors, stepped in to take over. When the owner of the I-70 and The Twin-coupled under the Globe Cinemas company-couldn’t afford to switch to digital projection, he was looking to sell the theaters. In this era, it’s natural to view a big company taking over a smaller one with skepticism, but B&B’s acquisition of The I-70 Drive-In and The Twin may spell salvation for both theaters. If you prefer an open lot to an indoor theater, we know which direction to point your car this summer. Lucky for us, Missouri still maintains ten of the nation’s remaining drive-ins, which number just over three hundred. The thrill of taking in a summer blockbuster beneath an open sky is a time-honored tradition, and it’s lost none of its wonder through the years. While trends suggest drive-ins are in a continual decline, new patrons turn out every season to experience the all-but-lost art of watching a movie outdoors. Meanwhile, B&B Theatres has taken over management of two other theaters, perhaps saving them from permanent closure. Three theaters have closed in the past year. Missouri’s drive-ins are adjusting to the times. Many of them host special events, such as flea markets, on their lots during daytime hours, and almost all screen double features, making the ever-costly movie ticket twice as valuable. While there are fewer drive-ins today, the ones that survive do so by employing creative business strategies. Since the height of their popularity, drive-ins have endured rising land prices, daylight savings time, and most recently, the end of 35mm projection- all of which have contributed to their decline.
